This is a private project done over the summer of 2021. I started expanding my collection of markers and noticed I had no good way to store them. This was my solution...
I experienced firsthand the difficulty of storing my alcohol markers in such a way that they are easily accessible, organized, and aesthetically pleasing. This design holds 45 markers per unit and is designed such that multiple units can be attached together through a system of small pins on the edges of the product. This allows the user to expand their collection with no issues as their collection of markers grows with them.
The pens are held in place by the smaller diameter bottom holes, as that diameter is smaller than the diameter of the pen. Whilst the top holes are large enough for the whole pen to fit through.
The design is inspired by automotive design, using an angular yet curved surface with a high gloss finish. The sharp angle of The Alien gives it the illusion of speed and allows for a sleek look.
The Alien name comes from the fact that when the holder is filled up with pens it looks like it could be the face of some sort of alien life form with lots of organized circles.
I built a prototype out of acrylic, using heat to bend it, and a drill press for the holes. In hindsight, a better solution for the manufacturing would have been to laser-cut the holes.
I use this prototype on a daily basis and have had peers interested in having their own version. The beauty of this design is that the holes can be cut to any shape required for any type of pen. This allows for a wider range of customers potentially considering this product if it were to go to market.
